he Sinharaja rain forest is the only undisturbed rainforest left in Sri Lanka. It is about 9000 hectares in extent. Many of the plants are very rare. Over 60% of the tree species are found only in the lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka. If these species of trees were allowed to get destroyed, the world would lose them altogether. So it is important that much effort is made to conserve this rich, valuable and fragile habitat.
The Sinharaja rain forest is the largest rainforest reserve in Sri Lanka. In 1840 Siharaja became a crown property. In 1988 the Sinhraja was made a National Wilderness area. In 1989 UNESCO included the Sinharaja Forest in the World Heritage list, as the first National Heritage of Sri Lanka.
The sinharaja forest is home to many rare animals, birds, butterflies, insects, reptiles and trees. Ferns and mosses grow well as the climate is humid because of heavy rainfall.

here are number of enchanting places have been enlisted in the pages of Sri Lankan history. Of those Sigiriya rock fortress is the most fascinating and marvelous. Being a natural rock created by great ruler Kashyapa, it has been attracted both local and foreign tourists for its amazing feat of engineering, which stands around forty miles to the North East of Matale city.
It was said that fear of his younger brother Moggallana that made king Kasyapa to find security on this huge rock which he transformed into a fortress. Though the king meant it to be a fortress, it was really a work of art too. In Sigiriya there are so many places to be attracted. Frescoes, mirror wall and the graffiti are some of them. The name Sigiriya implies its gateway as the throat of a huge Lion. Being one of our great national heritages, this natural rock fortress is evident for the grand our of our ancient Sri Lanka as well as the aesthetic skills of our primitive kings.
